No complaints as Clarets triumph

Academy Manager Tony Philliskirk had no complaints after Latics under-18's were beaten 3-0 by Burnley at Chapel Road in the North West Youth Alliance's North West Conference.

"Sometimes you have to hold up your hands and say the best team won," explained Philliskirk.

He continued: "They were quicker, stronger and Burnley set a benchmark for all of us to aspire to.

"After a good result at Preston, it was back to earth with a bump and an eye opener for a lot of our young players as to what it is all about."

After a successful pre season and victory at Preston in their opening league fixture, this was certainly a reality check for Latics' youngsters.

It was an even game for 25 minutes until Burnley broke clear to score.

They conceded a second goal shortly before half time when they were caught by a long ball over their defence.

Latics, in fairness, kept going in the second half but they never troubled the Clarets' keeper.

They conceded a third goal from a corner to round off a miserable day.

Defender Tomos Clarke and striker Jordan Bove, for his tireless work rate, were the only two players to emerge with credit.
