No complaints as Clarets triumph
Academy Manager Tony Philliskirk had no complaints after Latics under-18's were beaten 3-0 by Burnley at Chapel Road in the North West Youth Alliance's North West Conference."Sometimes you have to hold up your hands and say the best team won," explained Philliskirk.
He continued: "They were quicker, stronger and Burnley set a benchmark for all of us to aspire to.
"After a good result at Preston, it was back to earth with a bump and an eye opener for a lot of our young players as to what it is all about."
After a successful pre season and victory at Preston in their opening league fixture, this was certainly a reality check for Latics' youngsters.
It was an even game for 25 minutes until Burnley broke clear to score.
They conceded a second goal shortly before half time when they were caught by a long ball over their defence.
Latics, in fairness, kept going in the second half but they never troubled the Clarets' keeper.
They conceded a third goal from a corner to round off a miserable day.
Defender Tomos Clarke and striker Jordan Bove, for his tireless work rate, were the only two players to emerge with credit.
