Latics v Colchester: First-half report

21 December 2013

Latics trail at half-time.

Latics trail 2-0 at half time after a disappointing first 45 minutes at home to Colchester, leaving manager Lee Johnson with an important half time team talk to deliver. The visitors took the lead in fortunate fashion after 7 minutes, good work down the left hand side allowed Craig Eastmond to deliver a low cross along the 6 yard box and in trying to clear, Latics left back Ellis Plummer only succeeded in diverting the ball past a helpless Mark Oxley to give The U's the lead.

Latics fought back and created a few half chances, Mike Petrasso seeing a shot saved and Adam Rooney having a header go narrowly wide from a Carl Winchester free kick. However, just after the half hour the visitors doubled their advantage. Dominic Vose twisted and turned beyond Plummer and his cross-shot was finished from a couple of yards by veteran striker Jabo Ibehre.

Despite delivering several promising balls into the area Latics were unable to create any clear cut chances to get back into the game before referee Harrington brought the half to a conclusion.

Latics now have a lot of work to do in the second half to turn this game around and preserve an unbeaten home run stretching back to August.

Half-time: Latics 0, Colchester 2.
