Derby win for Latics Ladies

Oldham Athletic Ladies picked up their first win since the opening day of the season when they defeated Curzon Ashton Ladies Reserves 3-1 yesterday in the Greater Manchester Women’s Football League Division One.

Latics, due to recent signings, had the rare luxury of a team which included three substitutes.

They welcomed back feisty midfielder Kim Shaw from suspension while a three players made their debuts - Megan Robins, daughter of Huddersfield Town manager Mark, Catherine Hyde and Jessica Hardie.

Latics took the lead after 34 minutes when Shelby Newton scored from free kick bent over the defensive wall from 22 yards.

Newton and Lauren Steel combined to put Latics further ahead, Steel racing clear to slot home a shot.

The second half was more even. Latics keeper Dominique Marshall had yet another excellent game otherwise the result would have been different.

Curzon came out with more purpose and halved the deficit when Sarah Haymes poked home a corner.

Steel scored her second goal with six minutes left to seal victory, again racing clear to score from a tight angle.

Latics Ladies play Manchester Rovers on Sunday, February 24th (1.15pm) on Chapel Road 3G.
