Barnard's dream start

10 February 2013

Striker makes it two in two for Latics

Lee Barnard admitted he has made a dream start to the start of his loan spell with Latics.

The 28-year-old striker has found the net in each of his two appearances.

He said: "You always want to get off to a great start at a new club and mine could not have gone better.

"It was good for me personally to score on my debut at Walsall, but not for the team as we lost.

"It was good to score another goal on my home debut (against Milton Keynes Dons yesterday) but, more importantly for me, we picked up three points."

Barnard (pictured scoring against MK Dons) described it as a good performance yesterday saying it was reward for the hard work they had done in training.

He said: "MK Dons are a very good team and they will be up at the top at the end of the season.

"I thought we made them look an average side which is all credit to us. It was down to hard work and togetherness."

Barnard added he is loving his football with Latics.

"If you are enjoying your football you usually play well, two things which go hand in hand, and I have been lucky to score a couple of goals," he said.

Barnard says the quality in the squad has also made it easy for him to settle in the team.

He added they won't get carried away with the win as they realise they are in a relegation battle.

Barnard said: "We will have another good week's training and enjoy Everton, though the league games after that are more important.

"Everton at home in a game being televised live will be great for everybody connected with the club and hopefully we will give a good account of ourselves."

Barnard watched the win against Liverpool on television before completing his loan move from Southampton.

He said: "The lads were brilliant and I could see the quality in the team.

"I was desperate to play games and, when Oldham came in, I jumped at the chance to join them.

"They are a good club and, though they are down near the bottom, I don't see them as a team battling relegation but one capable of challenging for the play offs.

"Every time I have played against them, it has been a hard game and they have also played good football. That was a big factor in me deciding to come here."
