Obita joy for Latics before Anichebe equalises for Everton

Jordan Obita stunned Premier League giants Everton as he gave Latics the lead in their FA Cup with Budweiser, fifth-round tie at Boundary Park.

Victor Anichebe equalised for Everton, but Latics more than matched their opponents whose starting line up comprised 11 full internationals.

Latics more than matched their Everton from the kick off.

The Toffees had to wait until the 12thminute before creating their first chance when a free kick from Leighton Baines deflected off the defensive wall flying just wide of the upright.

There were joyous celebrations moments later when Latics took the lead.

Lee Croft made a deadly break down the right and delivered a low cross to the far post which was converted by Obita as he stole in blindside from the left flank.

Everton equalised midway through the opening period through Anichebe.

Nikica Jelavic headed on Darron Gibson's long ball to set up striker Anichebe who turned Jean-Yves M’voto before firing an unstoppable shot past keeper Dean Bouzanis.

Latics almost regained the lead within 60 seconds when Obita’s shot from the left of the box took a deflection before hitting the inside of the far upright and being scrambled to safety.

Everton had another opening late in the half when a header from Marouane Fellaini, following a Phil Neville cross, looped onto the roof of the net.

Half-time: Latics 1, Everton 1.
