Manager's praise for new boys

1 February 2013

They've already made a difference

Paul Dickov insists Latics' four new signings have already made a difference after only one training session at Boundary Park.

"There was a buzz in training today and they already have the bit between their teeth and are desperate to do well, " explained Latics' manager.

Dickov is delighted with yesterday's captures of Chris Iwelumo, Jordan Obita and Lee Barnard to go with Paul Murray who arrived earlier in the week.

He added it was imperative due to injuries picked up by Matt Smith, Robbie Simpson and Youssouf M'Changama against Liverpool while Cristian Montano and David Mellor are also on the sidelines.

Dickov continued: "I have named a 19-man squad tomorrow which is every player we have available and which includes the new players which tells the story.

"Simon (Latics' Chairman Simon Corney) has been fantastic. He knew we were light on numbers and we wanted players with experience as well as quality.

"And the players we have managed to bring in will hopefully made a big difference."

Dickov had earlier spoken of the wealth of experience Murray and Iwelumo will bring to the team which had an average age of 22 against Liverpool last Sunday.

Of his two latest captures, Dickov is delighted to have captured Barnard and Obita.

He said: "Lee is a top-quality player with experience and a proven goalscorer.

"I am delighted to have got him because we faced a lot of competition.

"Matt Smith and Robbie Simpson did well against Liverpool but in other games we have been let down by our failure to take our chances.

"Lee and Chris ought to provide us with more firepower.

"As for Jordan, I watched him on loan at Portsmouth and was impressed.

"We have lacked pace on the left which Jordan will provide in the absence of Cristian."
