Reserves' cup defeat

Players will learn from loss - Philliskirk

Reserve-team manager Tony Philliskirk believes Latics' young players will learn from last night's 7-0 defeat inflicted by Manchester United in the Manchester Senior Cup.

"United were rampant in the second half when we couldn't live with their passing and movement. It was a great learning experience for our players to come up against top-quality footballers," he said.

Four of the goals came in the last 16 minutes which Philliskirk added didn't give a true reflection of the match.

Philliskirk (pictured) explained: "There is no way it was a 7-0 as it was goalless for half an hour during which time we had the better of the chances.

"United scored twice late in the half which killed us.

"Five of the goals came from individual mistakes which we might have got away with against lesser teams, but against a team like United each one was punished.

"Sometimes you have to hold up your hands and say you were beaten by a better team which was also physically stronger.

"I couldn't fault our effort and determination which was excellent. It was just we were beaten by a superior team."
