Latics go down fighting

Latics reserves produced a spirited second-half showing at Tranmere Rovers where they lost 2-1 in their Central League fixture.

Daniel Taylor's penalty with 20 minutes left set up a fascinating finish after Latics had earlier looked well beaten.

Latics, 2-0 down at the break, were lucky not to concede a third goal on the hour.

Abdulai Bell-Baggie's free kick took a deflection off the defensive wall and struck an upright.

Latics made a triple substitution after an hour when Joe Edwards, Tomos Jones and Glenn Belezika were replaced by Jack Poxon, Colin Hall and schoolboy Ryan Ellison.

The deficit was halved with 20 minutes left when Taylor was fouled.

Taylor's spot kick was saved by keeper Jason Mooney, but squirmed out of his grasp and trickled over the line.

Mooney made amends with a super stop to keep out Kirk Millar's long-range shot and then dived to stop Poxon's follow-up effort as Latics went with a bold 4-2-4 formation in pursuit of an equaliser.

Full-time: Tranmere 2, Latics reserves 1.
