Chairman happy for fans

6 January 2013

Our season's still alive says Simon Corney

Latics' progression to the fourth round of the FA Cup with Budweiser is a massive lift to the club financially.

Third-round winners, including Latics, each picked up £67,000 prize money plus a 40-per-cent share of the gate receipts from the tie at Nottingham Forest.

Latics are likely to receive a total sum of approaching six figures which, according to Chairman Simon Corney, a massive help as it is no secret the club is struggling financially.

On top of that, there will be the gate receipts picked up from a fourth-round match and potentially £90,000 from the prize pot if they win again.

Mr Corney (pictured) said: "First the foremost the win at Nottingham Forest was great for the fans.

"We have not seen a lot of great football recently and the fans were magnificent.

"People might not believe me, but it gave me more pleasure to hear the fans cheering, singing and enjoying themselves than winning the match.

"Of course winning the game was also important and helps the club tremendously from a financial point of view.

"It was a good day out, we are still in the cup and our season is still alive."

Mr Corney would like non-league Macclesfield Town or Luton Town in this afternoon's fourth-round draw and the chance to progress to the last 16.
