Latics stung by Bees

Latics fell behind to an early Clayton Donaldson goal in their npower League One match against Brentford at Boundary park.

Donaldson, the Bees' top scorer, scored the only goal of the opening period in the fifth minute.

There was a huge cheer just before kick off when it was announced that Jose Baxter had signed a new two-and-a-half year contract.

Chants of 'Jose Baxter baby' reverberated around Boundary Park.

Latics had an early chance but Matt Smith (pictured) could direct his header at keeper Simon Moore.

The new-found optimism was dampened when Brentford snatched a fifth-minute lead.

Harry Forrester delivered a delicious cross from the left and Donaldson powered home a header from six yards, his 16th goal of the season.

Latics came back determinedly as Smith and Baxter both had goal attempts, but each flew narrowly wide of the target.

Cliff Byrne then flashed a near-post shot into the side netting from Lee Croft's free kick.

After the early flurry of activity, the match hit a lull as each side cancelled out the other.

Latics had a great chance to equalise in the 40th minute after a superb build up which ended with Carl Winchester shooting disappointingly wide.

Then in the dying seconds of the half Baxter chipped wide after spotting keeper Moore had strayed off his line.

Half-time: Latics 0, Brentford 1
