Showunmi strike is blow for Latics

Latics trailed to a goal from big striker Enoch Showunmi at half time in their rearranged npower League One match at Notts County.

Showunmi struck late in the opening period to leave Latics to pull back a deficit in the second period at Meadow Lane.

After a low-key opening, County carved out two chances in quick succession.

Alan Judge's free kick dipped narrowly over after Cliff Byrne tripped Andre Boucaud 25 yards from goal.

Judge then intercepted a pass from Jonathan Grounds and burst through on goal and rounded keeper Dean Bouzanis before firing into the side netting from a tight angle.

Yoann Arquin then headed narrowly wide from a cross by Jamal Campbell-Ryce.

Latics had their first chance in the 19th minute when Matt Smith won the ball in midfield and made a solo forward burst before ballooning the ball over the crossbar.

Jose Baxter (pictured) shot straight at keeper Bartosz Bialkowski from distance while at the other end Showunmi fired not far wide of the upright as the game remained goalless.

County made the all important breakthrough in the 36th minute following a brilliant move.

Boucaud's pass split open Latics' defence as Campbell-Ryce burst into the box and from the right crossed to the far post for Showunmi to almost walk the ball into the empty net for only his second goal of the campaign.

Half-time: Notts County 1, Latics 0.
