Second-half report

22 January 2013

No joy this time in Nottingham

Latics failed to make it a Nottingham double in January as they lost 1-0 at County in their rearranged npower League One match.

Two-and-a-half weeks after their memorable win just across the River Trent at Forest in the FA Cup with Budweiser came another disappointing league defeat.

Enoch Showunmi's first-half goal was all that separated the teams as Latics' troubles continued as they have now picked up only one point from their last eight league matches.

And despite a spirited second-half showing, they had nothing to show for their efforts.

Latics, 1-0 down at the break, had a great chance to equalise soon after the restart, but Jonathan Grounds headed well over from a superb free kick from Jose Baxter.

They were denied again when Gary Liddle made a spectacular goalline clearance to deny Matt Smith (pictured) who beat keeper Bartosz Bialkowski to a left-wing cross from Youssouf M'Changama.

Latics made a triple substitution in the 64th minute as Lee Croft, Robbie Simpson and Carl Winchester replaced M'Changama, Chris Sutherland and Daniel Taylor.

Smith had two further headed chances - narrowly wide at the near post from a Baxter corner and then well over from a Reece Wabara cross.

Alan Judge had a chance to double County's lead, but sliced a near-post shot across the face of goal.

Showunmi then ran from deep to power a header over the crossbar.

Simpson produced a great turn but saw his shot deflected narrowly wide while Winchester cut in from the left, but blazed over.

Latics continued to press for an equaliser as a terrific shot from James Wesolowski forced a diving save from Bialkowski.

Full-time: Notts County 1, Latics 0.
