Baxter spot on for Latics

Jose Baxter fired Latics ahead in their pre-season friendly against Huddersfield Town at Boundary Park.

The mercurial Baxter scored with a penalty as Latics took the lead against their SkyBet Championship opponents.

Adam Clayton forced an easy diving save from keeper Mark Oxley following a free kick bent around the defensive wall.

Latics' first chance came following a break by Cristian Montano, but Charlie MacDonald just failed to get on the end of his left-wing cross.

Montano brought an excellent save from keeper Alex Smithies after he let fly from 25 yards.

Huddersfield lost striker James Vaughan through injury after quarter of an hour after he fell awkwardly challenging for a cross inside the six-yard box.

There was a sense of urgency when players frantically summoned assistance from the bench as both physios and Latics' club doctor dashed to the aid of Vaughan who landed on his head.

A stretcher was called for but, happily, the concussed Vaughan eventually got to his feet and walked from the pitch.

Latics made the breakthrough in the 25th minute through a Baxter penalty.

Baxter's delightful through ball released Adam Rooney who burst clear only to be tripped by left-back Paul Dixon.

Baxter sent Smithies the wrong way from the spot with an excellent shot low to the left of the keeper.

Oxley pulled off a terrific save to turn an angled shot from Martin Patterson round the post for a corner.

Huddersfield had another chance to equalise when Oscar Gobern glanced a header narrowly wide.

Baxter burst forward and unleashed a powerful drive which Smithies could only parry.

Latics had a massive let off moments before half time when Huddersfield substitute Cristian Lopez latched on to a weak back pass from David Mellor, but he rolled his shot inches wide with only Oxley to beat.

Half-time: Latics 1, Huddersfield Town 0.
