Baxter on striking options

Jose Baxter believes Latics have the firepower needed to have a successful season.

Baxter is one of five front men vying for the two striking spots as manager Lee Johnson has addressed last season's problems.

Latics managed to score only 46 league goals and had one of the worst returns in League One.

It looks like being an altogether different story this time as the five friendlies had yielded a total of 12 goals.

Baxter said: "There is a lot of competition and, if you don't play well, there is somebody on the bench who will come on and take your place.

"Competition keeps you on your toes which is good and what you want in football to make you play better.

"It is good that we have strikers on the bench, player who can come on and influence the game."

He also believes there is more strength in depth in the squad compared to last season which is a further positive.

Baxter described it as a positive pre-season with Latics unbeaten in their five warm-up matches adding there is a buzz about the club.

And he believes that bodes well for the 2013/14 campaign.

Speaking after the win against Huddersfield, Baxter said: "I know there are people who have doubts about how we will do, but we know deep down we can get promoted.

"We showed that by competing against a great Huddersfield side which has some great players.

"We did well and you would not have known we are a League One side and they are in the Championship."
