Latics lose way

16 July 2013

Team squanders 4-1 lead

Latics squandered a 4-1 lead as they lost 5-4 to Burnley in a highly-entertaining behind-closed doors friendly at Chapel Road.

It was a match of contrasting fortunes as Latics produced some excellent attacking play, but they were let down by poor defending.

Latics established a 3-1 interval lead through two identical strikes from Jonson Clarke-Harris and also an Adam Rooney strike.

Clarke-Harris (pictured) each time cut in from the right before firing in low shots across the face of goal.

He then played in Rooney who found the net from a tight angle.

Clarke-Harris saw a free kick beaten out by the Burnley keeper only for Latvian trialist Edijs Joksts to slot home the rebound from close range to make it 4-1 just short of the hour.

Latics looked home and dry until Burnley, whose side included six trialists, launched an improbable comeback scoring after 76,77, 82 and 83 minutes to snatch an unlikely victory.
