MacDonald quick off the mark

Debut goal for Charlie

Charlie MacDonald is no stranger of scoring on his debut for clubs.

And the 32-year-old striker maintained that sequence by finding the net in his first appearance for Latics in Friday's 2-2 draw against Dinamo Bucharest.

MacDonald said: "It is lovely to get off the mark on your debut and it makes you think you have settled in straightaway, though obviously it counts for nothing at this early stage of the season.

"But it is great for the crowd to get to know the new signings."

MacDonald, who also scored on his debuts for Brentford and MK Dons, described it as a "left-foot swinger" which went into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the box.

He added the quality of Latics' performance against one of Romania's top teams was a massive lift.

MacDonald said: "I know results are not important at this stage of the season, but not to lose against a really good side breeds confidence going into our next game and you want to take that into the season.

"We played some lovely football and Jose (Baxter) playing in the hole behind the front man, got on the ball and made things happen.

"Jonson (Clarke-Harris) caused problems us front. We looked solid and as though everybody knew what they were doing.

"I have seen bits and pieces in training which bodes well.

"The lads have looked bubbly and sharp. We play good attacking football, break quickly, have pace on the flanks and I am sure we will cause teams a lot of problems.

"I am excited to get pre-season finished and to start the season."
