Latics' manager is delighted the 20-year-old defender has pledged his future to Latics for the next two years.
Johnson is excited at the prospect of working with Tarkowski saying: "I am really pleased he is staying because he has so much potential, and I want to bring it out.
"I am looking forward to working with him and he needs to be playing games.
"I believe he has the potential to have a very good career and play in the Championship at least...and hopefully for us.
"There are flaws in his game, as there are in all young players, and it is my job to iron them out."
