Taylor spot on for Latics

Daniel Taylor (pictured) scored a penalty for Latics reserves on the stroke of half time in their Central League, West Division match at Morecambe.

It enabled Latics to cancel Chris Holroyd's strike which had given the Shrimps the lead midway through the opening period.

Morecambe had a couple of early goal attempts as Joe McGee forced a save from Liam Jacob while Jordan Burrow shot narrowly wide.

Latics came closest to scoring when an excellent dribble by Kirk Millar set up Cristian Montano whose angled drive was superbly beaten out by keeper Jack Cookson.

Chris Holroyd saw a shot flash just wide of the upright before the Shrimps took the lead midway through the half.

Aaron McGowan crossed from the right and Holroyd fired high into the roof of the net from six yards.

Latics came close to equalising when Montano's fierce drive was only parried by Cookson who made a brilliant block to keep out Millar's follow-up shot.

They had another great chance moments later when Millar latched on to a weak back pass from Kyle Lewis.

Cookson blocked and Millar picked himself up and raced away only to fire narrowly wide with the keeper still out of his goal.

Latics were eventually rewarded for their efforts in the 44th minute when a left-wing cross from Connor Hughes was handled by Chris Doyle and Taylor fired home the spot kick.

Half-time: Morecambe reserves 1, Latics reserves 1.
