Praise for Latics' left back

Jonathan Grounds has been described as one of the unsung heroes of Latics' recent revival.

While the likes of Matt Smith and Jose Baxter have been attracting a blaze of publicity, Grounds' performances have slipped under the radar.

"I have not seen a better left back in npower League One than Jonathan, " declared Caretaker Manager Tony Philliskirk.

Philliskirk admitted to being critical of Grounds (pictured) initially saying he believed he was underachieving at Boundary Park.

He says Grounds, who had played in the Premier League for Middlesbrough, has impressed him in recent weeks.

Philliskirk said: "Jonathan is way better than League One from what I have seen.

"He is only young and has size, stature and a great left foot which is why we have put him on set pieces because of his delivery.

"Jonathan has been involved in a few goals which has given him confidence."

Philliskirk describes Grounds as quiet and unassuming.

He continued: "I have told Jonathan not to be happy to play at this level because he has potential to play at a higher one.

"You often need luck to be elevated to the next level, but a lot of that has to come from within and Jonathan has the ability to be a top player."
