Two goals for Connor, but Latics lose
Connor Hughes scored two spectacular goals for Latics reserves, but still ended up on the losing side at they were beaten 3-2 at Rotherham United in this afternoon's Central League, West Division match at Parkgate FC.The midfield man (pictured), continuing his comeback after injury, played the full 90 minutes as did Glenn Belezika who, too, has had a lengthy injury lay off.
Latics fell behind to a Connor Bell goal only to equalise through an exocet strike by Hughes from 35 yards which arrowed into the top corner of the net.
And Hughes struck again with another long-range spectacular shot to give Latics a 2-1 interval lead.
Rotherham made it 2-2 midway through the second period after breaching Latics' offside trap as Bell also grabbed his second goal of the game.
It looked as though the game was petering out into a draw when Rotherham snatched an injury-time equaliser from James Cadman.
Coach Mick Priest described it as a "wonder strike" as the Rotherham player hooked a shot over his shoulder into the far top corner of the net.
He added a draw would have been a fair result as Latics didn't do enough to win.
Priest pointed out Latics must learn how to manage games better and see them out.
On a positive note, he said, were the performances of Hughes and Belezika as they continued their comebacks from injury.
