Latics' relegation battle

3 March 2013

Destiny is in our own hands - Philliskirk

Caretaker Manager Tony Philliskirk maintains Latics' destiny lies in their own hands as they battle to retain their npower League One status.

Latics slid back into the bottom four relegation places following yesterday's 2-0 home defeat by second-placed Sheffield United.

Philliskirk (pictured) believes five wins from their remaining 12 league games should guarantee safety.

That would lift Latics' points total to 51 with the benchmark for safety usually 50.

Philliskirk says the games against teams in and around them at the bottom of the table will be crucial.

He explained: "We have a massive game next week at Tranmere (promotion hopefuls) and then after that we have Hartlepool at home.

"We also have to play Colchester, Carlisle and Crawley at home and away to Bury and Shrewsbury. They are all teams who are in and around us.

"It is in our hands and I think the five or six games mentioned will be the defining ones of the season.

"If we keep showing the spirit and determination we have been doing, I am sure we will get out of trouble."
