Jack impresses as super sub

Reserve-team coach Paul Murray was left to reflect on Latics' inconsistency as they were beaten 4-3 at home by Bury in Central League, West Division.

Latics, who found themselves 4-1 down early in second half, staged a spirited second-half fightback in which they nearly snatched a point.

Murray said: "Before the game I spoke to the young lads about them not being consistent and it was a question I asked of them.

"In the first half we conceded sloppy goals and weren't at the races.

"In fairness we had a go in the second half when we showed effort and desire and we might have nicked a draw at the end.

"In the end it is all about development with the kids and hopefully lessons will have been learned."

Murray added it was difficult introducing trialists Sam Baffour and Cherno Mendy who had only arrived that day.

He singled out Jack Poxon (pictured), a substitute for Cristian Montano early in the second half, for praise.

Murray said: "Jack made a difference when he came on as he did the basics.

"He did the nitty gritty - winning headers and tackles as well as passing the ball forward which we weren't doing before he came on."
