Great away point for Latics

Latics picked up a terrific point in their battle to avoid relegation from npower League One following a 1-1 draw at promotion-chasing Swindon Town.

It followed a fabulous defensive display as Latics had to withstand a second-half bombardment from the hosts.

Latics had shocked Swindon taking the lead through a goal from Lee Barnard only for Swindon to hit back through a wonder strike from substitute Adam Rooney.

After a goalless opening half, there was a huge let off for Latics soon after the restart as Andy Williams raced clear on to a defence-splitting pass.

The Swindon striker looked certain to score but shot just wide under pressure from James Tarkowski.

Swindon themselves survived a scare when keeper Wes Foderingham and centre-back Aden Flint collided near the corner flag as they both attempted a clearance.

Jose Baxter nipped in and and fired over a superb cross which Lee Barnard just couldn't connect with.

Swindon lost Nathan Thompson through injury and then manager Kevin MacDonald made two further changes midway through the half to complete his three permitted substitutions with 25 minutes to play.

It was Latics who made the breakthrough in the 68th minute through Barnard.

Lee Croft provided the assist with a fabulous dribble on the right before cutting the ball back for Barnard to fire high into the roof of the net.

Swindon equalised within four minutes through a wonder strike from substitute Rooney.

Substitute Nathan Byrne fired over a cross from the right which Latics failed to clear as Rooney found the net with a spectacular overhead kick.

There was an escape for Latics moment later when Rooney headed just wide from a Dean Parrett corner.

Substitute James Collins then fired over at the near post from a Parrett free kick.

Latics made all three substitutions in quick succession as Croft, Robbie Simpson and goalscorer Barnard were replaced by Cristian Montano, Chris Iwelumo and Matt Smith.

Rooney had a great chance to give Swindon with 11 minutes left when he was left completely free at the far post following a diagonal ball from the left, but shot over when it looked as though he could not miss.

Swindon had another great chance when Collins eluded the offside trap and burst through only for Bouzanis to make a great block.

Ward then headed wide at the far post from a Parrett free kick as Swindon went all out for a winning goal.

Collins had another great chance when he headed just wide from a Byrne cross.

Rooney had a great chance to win the game in the third of five minutes of added time, but Rooney just couldn't connect in front of goal.

Full-time: Swindon Town 1, Latics 1.
