Tale of two halves

17 March 2013

Youth team lose to Preston

Latics under-18's lost 4-0 at Preston North End in a Football League Youth Alliance, North West Conference fixtures which was a tale of two halves.

Coach Mick Priest (pictured) could never have envisaged the final scoreline after a goalless opening period as mid-table Latics more than held their own against second-placed Preston.

He said: "It was a fantastic first-half performance in which the lads did everything asked of them.

"The worry is that this team never performs for the full 90 minutes."

Latics found themselves 2-0 down within four minutes of the restart through two avoidable goals.

Preston made it 3-0 through a free header 20 minutes from time and conceded another in the last minute.

It could conceivably have been five as Preston also had an injury-time penalty saved by Joel Coleman.

"As pleased as I was at half time, I was disappointed by our second-half showing," said Priest.
