Johnson praise for Robbie

Of all the players who will be leaving Latics, Lee Johnson says he will be especially sad to lose Robbie Simpson who is one of five who are not being offered new contracts.

Latics manager paid tribute to the 28-year-old striker/midfield man  who made 80 first-team appearances for the club scoring 13 goals. There was even one cameo as a goalkeeper which is pictured.

Johnson said: "Robbie has been fantastic during the short time I have been here.

"I like him as a person and he gave everything whether in a match or on the training pitch.

"It is a measure of how highly I regard Robbie that I made him captain when James Wesolowski was ruled out.

"And as I have mentioned before, if you were in the trenches, Robbie is the sort of character you would like alongside you."

Simpson joined Latics from Huddersfield Town in August 2011, initially on loan.

That became a permanent move in January 2012 to the end of that campaign when he signed a new 12-month deal to cover the campaign which has just ended.
