Cup win for Latics

12 November 2013

Super strike from super-sub Tansinda seals victory

Latics under-18's won through to the semi-finals of the Lancashire FA Youth Cup this afternoon following a thrilling 2-1 win at Burnley.

Substitute Emile Tansinda (pictured) came off the bench to secure victory with a spectacular match-winning goal.

Academy Manager Tony Philliskirk described it as an "outstanding" performance from what was effectively an under-17 side.

Latics were without a number of injured players while 14-goal top scorer Jordan Bove was withdrawn earlier today to join up with the first-team squad for tonight's Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie against Notts County. It left Latics with only 13 players.

There was an early blow when Latics lost Michael Brewster through injury after only two minutes.

Latics had chances to take the lead in the goalless opening period.

Jack Tuohy was denied by an unbelievable goalline clearance while Tomos Clarke and George Edmundson both headed over from inswinging corners.

Latics made a good start to the second period as Tuohy shot just wide while John Pritchard had a goalbound shot blocked.

They were eventually rewarded when a corner was cleared to Ben Grant who found the bottom corner with a well-struck drive from the edge of the box.

Latics conceded an equaliser within two minutes and then lost Jordache Walters

Tansinda had not been on the field long when he picked up the ball and, following a run, from the right edge of the box fired an unstoppable shot into the top far corner of the net.

Latics had chances to add a third goal.

Burnley then broke clean through on goal only for keeper Joel Coleman to make a great save to preserve a 2-1 lead as Latics held on to win 2-1.
