MacDonald sparks Latics to life

Charlie MacDonald scored a 44th minute equaliser for Latics in their Sky Bet League 1 fixture at Shrewsbury Town.

The striker, making his first start since returning from injury, netted his fourth goal of the campaign.

Latics had earlier fallen behind to a goal from Gozie Ugwu, a striker signed on loan from Reading, who opened his account for the Shrews.

Shrewsbury had the better of the opening as twice in the early stages Latics' goalkeeper Mark Oxley had to make diving saves to deny Liam McAlinden and Darren Jones, though both were relatively easy.

And it was no surprise when the hosts took the lead in the 16th minute following a defensive mix-up between central defenders Jonathan Grounds and James Tarkowski.

Ugwu capitalised as he burst through and shot into the ground and saw the ball loop over Oxley into the net.

Latics had a great chance to equalise when Danny Philliskirk burst onto a great though ball, but keeper Chris Weale saved bravely at his feet.

Shrewsbury lost former Latics' player Joe Jacobson through injury midway through the opening period.

Latics, who had surrendered 71-per-cent possession in the opening half hour, made a change in the 33rd minute when Saturday's goal hero Michael Patrasso made way for Jonson Clarke-Harris.

And the striker (pictured) almost immediately got Latics on level termsĀ as his shot struck an upright.

Philliskirk, following up, saw his shot cleared off the line by Tamika Mkandawire. The rebound fell to Korey Smith whose goalbound drive was blocked.

Clarke-Harris has another goal attempt as he fired narrowly wide after producing a neat turn to make space for himself.

Latics equalised in the 44th minute when MacDonald raced onto a brilliant through ball from Anton Rodgers and slotted a low shot past Weale.

Half-time: Shrewsbury Town 1, Latics 1.
