Ladies lose their way

Unbeaten start comes to an end

Oldham Athletic Ladies' unbeaten start to the season came to a disappointing end when they were beaten 5-3 at home by Manchester Rovers in Division Two of the Greater Manchester Women’s Football League.

Yet the game could not have started better when player-of-the-match Harriett Busby found the net after only 10 seconds.

Nafisa Ali equalised after 11 minutes,

Rovers were on the back foot right from the off and they went behind twice more, but never let Latics gain a decisive lead. Shelby Newton made it 2-1 for Latics when she broke free and lashed a shot past Rovers keeper Ruderham before Ali equalised again two minutes later.

Alys Wild gave Latics the lead for a third time after 40 minutes as they reached half time 3-2 ahead.

Rovers came out in the second half and pressed Latics higher up the pitch and soon equalised when Rachael Grindrod’s corner bobbled around and eventually came back to her on the angle of the box and her neat chip beat Rachael Dinsdale.

Latics fell behind just short of the hour when a defensive mistake was pounced on by McGonagle who burst into the box and left Dinsdale with no chance.

Grindrod added a fifth goal with minutes left to seal victory.

It was a case of three points dropped today from a game that was very winnable.
