Latics lack cutting edge

Latics under-18's lacked a cutting edge as they were involved in a goalless draw at Shrewsbury Town in the Football League Youth Alliance's North West Conference.

It was a game dominated by Latics who clearly missed Jordan Bove, who had scored 14 goals in 12 youth-team matches, following his call up to the senior squad.

Academy Manager Tony Philliskirk was left to reflect on what might have been.

"We dominated the game but could not score. It was a decent performances and a match we felt we ought to have won," he said.

Latics had the best chances of an even first half, the best two falling to Jordache Walters, one of which was cleared off the line.

They continued to create openings in the second period only to shoot weakly at the Shrews keeper or fail to hit the target.

Then with minutes left, the Shrews almost snatched victory as one of their players burst clean through on goal.

Goalkeeper Joel Coleman (pictured) came to the rescue with a great save to ensure Latics left Shropshire with a point following their first draw in 11 league games.
