MacDonald's extra shooting pays off

Charlie MacDonald was back with a goal for Latics in last night's 2-1 win at Shrewsbury Town.

And the goal (pictured) was a replica of what the 32-year-old striker had practiced on the training ground the previous day.

Latics' front men were working on one-on-one's at the end of training and MacDonald finished top of the class with eight successes from 10 goal attempts.

MacDonald said: "We were working on our finishing in training the day before the game and Danny Philliskirk and I were missing a fair few chances.

"After training had finished, the gaffer got the strikers together to do a lot on one-versus one's and I managed to scored eight out of 10 which was pleasing.

"And to replicate that in the game was brilliant."

MacDonald made his first start at Shrewsbury since returning following an injury lay off with an ankle problem.

It was his first full 90 minutes since the start of October.

MacDonald said: "When the manager told me I was starting, he mentioned trying to get 65/70 minutes out of me.

"I didn't think I would play the whole, but I am pleased how I came through it.

"I had a fair amount of energy and felt sharp considering it was my first game back."

MacDonald was delighted how his goal kick started Latics after they had fallen behind at Greenhous Meadow.

He said: "The goal got us back into the game at a good point just before half time.

"It gave us a platform to come out in the second half and to kick on and play better than in the first half."
