Latics extend unbeaten run

Latics posted a fourth straight win and extended their unbeaten run to five games following a 2-1 victory at Shrewsbury Town in Sky Bet League 1.

They showed character after falling behind to a first-half strike from Gozie Ugwu.

Goals from Charlie MacDonald and Danny Philliskirk (pictured) - his eighth of the season - saw Latics turn the tables on their opponents.

After an electrifying end to the opening period, which ended 1-1, the start to the second half lacked a spark from either side.

Latics made their second substitution on the hour when Anton Rodgers made way for the introduction of James Wesolowski.

Jonson Clarke-Harris shot from two free kicks in quick succession. The first struck the defensive wall and the second was fired over the crossbar.

Luke Summerfield's drive from 30 yards flashed narrowly wide of the upright.

Latics made their final change midway through the half when Sidney Schmeltz replaced James Dayton.

The second and match-winning Latics' goal came in the 75th minute.

Charlie MacDonald supplied a pass from the left to Philliskirk who produced a deadly turn before shooting low to the left of keeper Chris Weale.

Latics then had to withstand Shrews' pressure and keeper Mark Oxley had to pull off a super save to turn Tom Bradshaw's shot to safety and then be alert to keep out a header from Connor Goldson.

Clarke-Harris burst through and his piledriver was beaten out by Weale.

There was a let off for Latics late on when a 30-yard volley from Dave McAllister flashed into the side netting with many home fans cheering as they thought it was an equalising goal.

Full-time: Shrewsbury Town 1, Latics 2.
