Penalty shootout to decide cup tie

The winners of Latics' FA Youth Cup, first-round tie against Sheffield United will be decided by a penalty shootout.

A gripping game ended with the scores level at 2-2 after 120 minutes.

Latics, who finished 1-1 after 90 minutes, had a great chance to take the lead for the first time early in the first period of extra time.

Jordache Walters made a terrific burst forward from midfield and his 25-yard shot was brilliantly turned round the post for a corner by keeper Jake Eastwood.

Walters went close again as he cut in from the right and unleashed a rasping shot which struck the far upright.

Latics took the lead in the 99th minute after a breakaway.

The Blades lashed a shot into the side netting and many of their fans thought they had scored.

Latics immediately broke away and Bove burst clean through to slot the ball low past keeper Jake Eastwood for his 14th youth-team goal of the season.

The Blades soon made it 2-2 after Latics conceded a free kick just outside the box and Otis Khan fired home his second goal of the game low to the left of keeper Joel Coleman.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men after 110 minutes when Khan was sent off for retaliating after Bove kicked the ball at him after he lay on the ground after being fouled.

Final score: Latics under-18's 2, Sheffield United 2 (after extra time)

Penalty shootout to follow.
