Rooney spot on for Latics

Adam Rooney gave Latics a first-half lead against Carlisle United with a penalty.

The striker (pictured) was spot on as he scored his fourth goal of the campaign.

Carlisle keeper Mark Gillespie was forced into an early diving save, though Rooney's shot looked to be off target.

Latics received a let off after Joseph Mills was dispossessed by David Amoo close to the byline.

Amoo cut into the box only to see his angled shot beaten out by keeper Mark Oxley.

Latics were forced to make a change in the 15th minute when Charlie MacDonald limped off after hurting his right leg to be replaced by Kirk Millar.

And Millar went close to breaking the deadlock midway through the half when his goalbound shot was deflected just wide.

Latics went ahead in the 26th minute through a penalty from Rooney which was awarded after referee Mark Heywood ruled he had been shoved over in the box by Conor Townsend.

Gillespie was unlucky not to keep out the spot kick low to his right as his got a good hand to the shot.

Millar could have doubled the lead moments later, but Gillespie made a good save low down to keep out his angled effort.

Amoo had a great chance to equalise on the stroke of half time, but was unable to get a head to Matty Robson's cross only two yards from goal.

Half-time: Latics 1, Carlisle 0.
