First-half report

26 October 2013

Winchester goal-den boy

Defender Carl Winchester showed Latics the route to goal as they built a 1-0 half-time at home to Swindon Town in Sky Bet League 1.

Winchester scored a goal-of-the-month contender to break the deadlock.

There was a low-key opening and it took until the 24th minute before either side created a meaningful chance.

Then Kirk Millar ought to have given Latics the lead as he had a gilt-edged chance.

Winchester delivered a delightful cross from the right, but Millar's diving header from eight yards flew wide.

It needed something to break the stalemate, and that was provided by Winchester.

He started a galloping run from half way and then 25 yards out tried his luck with a lofted shot over keeper Wes Foderingham which went in off the underside of the crossbar.

The only dampener in the opening half was a fifth booking of the season for James Tarkowski which has triggered a one-match ban which will rule him out of Tuesday's league game at Notts County.

Half-time: Latics 1, Swindon Town 0.
