First-half report

30 October 2013

Latics hit by early strike

Latics under-18's were hit by an early goal in their FA Youth Cup, first-round tie against Sheffield United at rain-lashed Boundary Park.

But they more than matched the Blades in the opening period and were unlucky to be 1-0 down at the break.

Latics fell behind in the sixth minute when they were caught out by a long forward ball.

Otis Khan raced on to the pass and cut inside before curling a superb shot low to the left of keeper Joel Coleman.

Coleman also had to turn over a drive from Louis Reed.

However, Latics also had chances in the half.

Danny Byrnes (pictured) had two decent strikes at goal while Jordache Walters made a fabulous solo run from half way only to be denied by keeper Jake Eastwood who saved bravely at his feet on the six-yard line.

Then eight minutes before the break, Eastwood pulled off a super save low to his left to turn away a shot from Ben Grant.

Half time: Latics under-18's 0, Sheffield United 1.
