Groves named 10th legend

14 October 2013

Fans choose seventies cult hero

Seventies star Alan Groves has been chosen by fans as the 10th legend to feature in the new North Stand at Boundary Park.

The charismatic winger (pictured), who died at the age of 29, finished well clear in the supporters' poll.

Groves, a member of the 1973/74 Third Division championship winning campaign, played for Latics between 1974/77 making 140 league appearances and becoming a cult hero.

And it is a measure of the affection in which Groves is still held that he beat off competition from Ernie Cooksey, Earl Barrett, Frank Bunn, Neil Redfearn, Rick Holden, Gunnar Halle, Jim Fryatt and Andy Goram, who were in the top ten, to top the vote.

Groves will take his place in the new North Stand alongside Joe Royle, Andy Ritchie, Roger Palmer, Bert Lister, Bobby Johnstone, Eric Gemmell, Ian Wood, David Eyres and Jimmy Frizzell.

Further details about how the legends will feature in the new North Stand will be released soon.
