Opening-day victory

Oldham Athletic Ladies finally opened the delayed start to their season with a 6-4 victory over Avro's Ladies in division two of the Greater Manchester Women's  Football League.

Latics, fielding few survivors after two poor seasons, should have won by a far greater margin.

Eight players on Latics' team sheet were making their debuts.

Latics were soon ahead, Annette Falch scoring after 10 minutes and midway through the half she found the net for a second time.

Between those two goals, Avro equalised and Latics' Harriet Busby hit a post.

Shelby Newton made it 3-1 when her shot-cum-cross beat the keeper on her near post and after 42 minutes another Newton cross was converted by Alison Barber.

Avro's pulled a goal back to make it 4-2 just before the break.

Yasmin Deane scored direct from a corner on 50 mins before two goals in a minute by Avro suddenly reduce the deficit to 5-4.

Falch sealed victory after 72 minutes with her third goal of the game as her cross rebounded back to her to shoot into an empty net.
