Latics' injury nightmare

Johnson welcomes break

Lee Johnson is relieved injury-hit Latics have no first-team match this Saturday.

Latics' manager will look to the 11-day break as providing extra time for Boundary Park's walking wounded to recover.

Having initially been frustrated and disappointed by the postponement of Saturday's game at the request of Notts County who have three players on international duty, Johnson is now happy to have no game in the light of his team's injury troubles.

Johnson was forced to sent out a patched-up side in last night's Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie at Preston North End where they won 2-0.

Latics manager revealed how:

* James Tarkowski had been ill and got out of his sick bed to play.

* Joseph Mills played with a calf strain and golf-ball sized lump on that part of his leg.

* Korey Smith (pictured) pulled a thigh muscle in the pre-match warm up.

* Genseric Kusunga was substituted because of a tight hamstring.

Johnson will give his players three days off - Friday, Saturday and Sunday - to recuperate from knocks and, in Tarkowski's case, illness before preparations begin for their next game which is at home to Carlisle on Saturday week.
