Latics Ladies' incident-filled opener

21 October 2013

Four sent off in 4-4 draw

They had two players sent off while two club officials were also dismissed in what turned out to be a feisty fixture.

Oldham Athletic Ladies had an eventful afternoon when they drew 4-4 at Moorside Rangers in their opening fixture of the season in the second division of the Greater Manchester Woman’s Football League.
Latics had to field midfielder Kim Shaw in goal after injury left them without a recognised keeper.

And Shaw made a dream start saving an early penalty from Sarah Wilson. Shelby Newton fired Latics ahead seconds later and added another two minutes later to give them a 2-0 lead.
Annette Falch added a third on 25 minutes when she broke away and Latics were well on top.
Things started to go awry from here on in.
Delyth Lloyd reduced the arrears after 28 minutes shooting past Shaw.
The referee awarded a second penalty to Rangers soon afterwards, but Wilson again failed to convert when she shot wide.

Things became even more bizarre when a third first-half penalty was awarded to Moorside and Wilson missed for a third time firing over the bar.
Alys Wild put Latics 4-1 ahead deep into first half stoppage time.
If the first half was eventful, it was only a warm up for the second.
Just short of the hour keeper Shaw was adjudged to have handled outside the area. From the free kick the ball hit the bar and Latics' players clearly thought it bounced pitch side of the goal line before being caught by Shaw. The referee gave the goal and Shaw was shown a red card during the protests.
Moorside made the extra player advantage tell over the next 15 mins when Kate Pinder and Lisa Burton scored to make it 4-4.
Latics were really under the cosh as Moorside pressed for a winner and things got even worse for Latics when Gemma Smith was also dismissed as they finished with nine players while two of their officials were also dismissed.
Latics: Kim Shaw, Rebecca Dinsdale, Catherine Hyde, Emmanvoela Chrissaki, Nicole Brien, Gemma Smith, Cheredith Green, Shelby Newton, Yasmin Deane, Annette Falch, Alys Wild. Subs: Dawn Wild, Cedellah Kayupa, Patricia Turner
