Disappointing night for Latics

Latics experienced a disappointing night as they slipped to a 3-2 defeat at bottom-club Notts County in their rearranged Sky Bet League 1 fixture.

Though Latics twice found the net through Adam Rooney and Jonson Clarke-Harris, they were undone defensively.

Latics conceded three goals from Danny Haynes, Yoann Arquin and Callum McGregor as they left Meadow Lane empty handed.

Latics, who finished the opening half 1-1, had two chances to take the lead soon after the restart.

Both fell to James Dayton (pictured) who fired wide and then, after bursting clear on the left, chipped keeper Bartosz Bialkowski but again failed to hit the target.

Latics carved out another opening when left-back David Mellor broke forward and unleashed a terrific shot which was deflected for a corner.

Then against the run of play, County regained the lead of the hour.

Mark Fotheringham crossed from the right and substitute Arquin was left unmarked at the far post to head into the far corner of the net.

County had another great chance to score when a cheeky back heel released McGregor who was stopped by a great block by keeper Mark Oxley. The ball rebounded to Haynes who shot over.

The hosts made it 3-1 in the 68th minute following a neat build up. McGregor showed great footwork on the edge of the box before firing low to the left of Oxley for his eighth goal of the season.

Latics reduced the deficit two minutes later when Clarke-Harris found the net with a thunderbolt free kick from 25 yards.

Carl Winchester made way for Anton Rodgers with 19 minutes left as Korey Smith was switched from midfield to right back.

Clarke-Harris had a free header to make it 3-3, but glanced it wide of the upright.

Latics made their final change with 11 minutes remaining as Sidney Schmeltz came on for Dayton.

Late on James Wesolowski fired into the side netting as Latics pressed for an equaliser.

And in stoppage time, Latics had an appeal for a penalty rejected, though Schmeltz was convinced he had been fouled.

Full-time: Notts County 3, Latics 2.
