First start for Rachubka

Paul Rachubka was handed his first start for Latics in tonight's Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie at Preston North End.

The 32-year-old (pictured) replaced previously ever-present Mark Oxley in goal, one of three changes from the side which started on Saturday against Leyton Orient.

Sidney Schmeltz and Adam Rooney won recalls as Charlie MacDonald stepped down to the bench while Matteo Lanzoni was ruled out through injury.

It looked as though Korey Smith would play as an emergency right back with James Dayton switching inside to the centre of midfield.

Preston made eight changes to the side which kicked off at Peterborough on Saturday.

Preston (3-5-2): Stuckmann; Laird, Huntington, Mousinho; Nicholson, Wroe, Welch, Croasdale, Buchanan; Holmes, Garner. Subs: Clarke, Beavon, Byrom, Rudd, Brownhill.

Latics (4-4-2): Rachubka; Smith, Tarkowski, Kusunga, Grounds; Schmeltz, Dayton, Wesolowski, Mills; Rooney, Philliskirk. Subs: Oxley, MacDonald, Montano, Mellor, Belezika.
