Winchester moves back

Carl happy with defensive role

Carl Winchester's career has turned full circle since he made his first-team debut for Latics almost three years ago.

The 20-year-old (pictured) made his bow at right back though, since then, he has played most of his football in midfield.

New manager Lee Johnson, however, believes Winchester has all the qualities to be a right back.

And that is where Winchester, a regular in the Northern Ireland under-21 side, has played in the last two matches for Latics against Swindon Town and Notts County.

Winchester, who has started the last three games, said: "I am just happy to get back playing after being injured pre-season.

"The gaffer likes me at right back and I am happy to play wherever he puts me.

"I like playing at right back as it gives me the chance to get forward.

"There is a lot of competition for places because we have a big squad. Hopefully I can stay in the side and progress."

Winchester's spectacular goal against Swindon was only his second for the club.

And he paid tribute to Latics' manager saying it was he who encouraged him to get forward and have goal attempts.
