Latics, Dale draw

4 September 2013

Competitive friendly finishes all square

Latics drew 1-1 against Rochdale this afternoon is a behind-closed doors friendly at Chapel Road.

It was arranged at short notice by Latics to give their squad players much needed game time.

The likes of new-signing Genseric Kusunga, Joel Coleman, Carl Winchester, David Mellor and Cliff Byrne were all given important minutes.

Winchester, who played for 70 minutes, had his first action since injuring his knee ligaments at the end of last season.

It was a competitive and sometimes feisty friendly as you would expect when these rivals clash, even though it was a friendly.

Latics took the lead after half an hour when Dale left-back Scott Tansey headed into his own goal.

Dale equalised through a peach of a free kick from Andrew Tutte.

They ought to have been ahead as Coleman (pictured) made one great save from Matty Done while Tutte also struck the crossbar.

Coleman ensured it remained all square when he pulled off two terrific second-half saves to deny Callum Camps and Ashley Eastham.

Mellor had a good chance to give Latics victory, but his shot was well saved.
