Derby victory at Bury

Latics under-18's produced another excellent performance as they won 5-0 at Bury in the Football League Youth Alliance's North West Conference.

It was a day of the bizarre as Latics were aided by two, possibly three, own goals while they also had to contend with a poor pitch at Walkden where the grass was long.

Latics took an early lead through John Pritchard's inswinging corner which was helped into the net by the Bury keeper, though Pritchard claimed the goal.

They doubled their advantage after quarter of an hour when Pritchard and Danny Byrnes combined and the latter's cross was headed into his own net by a Bury defender.

Latics' keeper Paul Tyson made a great save when the score was 1-0 while Jordan Bove could have added a third goal for Latics before the break.

There was a further own goal early in the second half when Bove chased the ball and forced the Bury full back to score past his own keeper.

Latics' fourth goal had no doubt about it as Byrnes was fouled in the box and Bove scored from the spot.

Defender Ryan Ellison was brought on up front as a striker substitute and found the net with an overhead scissor kick, the goal of the game.

Academy Manager Tony Philliskirk, who was without six regulars, was delighted with the way his side worked hard and deserved their win which he thought could have been by an even wider margin.
