Second-half report

Ten-man Latics lose to last-minute goal

Ten-man Latics produced a battling display only to cruelly lose 3-2 to a last-minute goal at Rotherham United who remain unbeaten in Sky Bet League 1.

Latics looked set to snatch a point until former Latics' loanee Daniel Nardiello inflicted the killer blow at the death.

Latics looked to have a mountainous challenge when David Mellor was sent off in the opening period when they trailed to a Nardiello penalty.

The 10 men produced a fabulous fightback to move 2-1 ahead through goals from Cristian Montano and Matteo Lanzoni (pictured).

Lee Frecklington made it 2-2 before Nardiello struck again as Latics cruelly left the New York Stadium empty handed.

Lanzoni, who conceded a first-half penalty, made amends as he put Latics ahead in the 52nd minute.

Adam Rooney's header from Joseph Mills' free kick was only parried by keeper Scott Shearer and the Italian right back slotted home the loose ball from inside the six-yard box.

Rotherham made it 2-2 just after the hour mark when Frecklington found the net with a near post glanced header into the far corner from Ben Pringle's corner.

Pringle came close to giving Rotherham the lead when his shot whistled just wide of the upright.

Latics made their second substitution midway through the half when Rooney made way for Jonson Clarke-Harris.

Nardiello had a great chance to put Rotherham ahead but blazed over from six yards.

Latics could then have regained the lead when Montano curled an exquisite shot which looked destined for the top corner until Shearer pulled off a breathtaking fingertip save to turn the ball to safety.

It was then the turn of Latics' keeper Mark Oxley to make a marvellous stop to keep out a header from Alex Revell.

Latics made their final change with seven minutes left when Montano was replaced by Albert Rusnak.

Rotherham snatched victory in the last minute when Frecklington's shot from Pringle's corner was well saved by Oxley, but Nardiello was on hand to slot home the rebound.

Full-time: Rotherham United 3, Latics 2.
