MacDonald earns Latics point

Charlie MacDonald earned Latics a point as they came from behind to draw 1-1 at home to Crewe Alexandra in Sky Bet League 1.

The striker (pictured) scored his second goal of the season to cancel out the first-half strike from Oliver Turton which had given the Railwaymen the lead.

It was Latics' first draw of the season while for Crewe it was their first away point and also their first goal on their league travels.

Latics, 1-0 down at the break, made a change from the restart as Jonson Clarke-Harris replaced Adam Rooney.

The equaliser was scored in the 54th minute when James Dayton lofted a ball over the Crewe defence and MacDonald eluded the offside trap to shoot low past keeper Steve Phillips for his second goal of the season.

Latics almost went ahead for the first time on the hour when Phillips pulled off a superb save to turn away a shot from Dayton who cut in from the left before unleashing a drive which looked destined for the top corner.

Manager Lee Johnson made his second switch with 19 minutes left when Dayton was withdrawn and Danny Philliskirk entered the fray.

Crewe would have regained the lead but for a great save from keeper Mark Oxley low to his right to turn away a shot from Max Clayton following a great turn.

Latics made their final change in the 75th minute when Kirk Millar replaced MacDonald.

There was a further let off for Latics with 12 minute left when Byron Moore's free kick was cleared to the edge of the box where substitute Ryan Colclough unleashed a great volley which Oxley did well to turn round the post.

Full-time: Latics 1, Crewe Alexandra 1.
