Cup win for Latics

Latics reserves pulled off an excellent 3-0 victory at Fleetwood Town in the first round of the Lancashire Senior Cup.

First-half goals from Kirk Millar and Dominic Barrett, who found his own net, set up the success for Latics' second string which was sealed through a late strike from Chris Sutherland.

Latics, 2-0 ahead at the break, had to survive a number of uncomfortable moments early in the second period.

Former Hull and Cardiff City striker Jon Parkin struck the outside of the upright with a shot from the edge of the box and then his diving header flew straight to keeper Paul Rachubka.

Jonson Clarke-Harris let fly from 30 yards and his effort was not far from giving Latics a three-goal advantage.

Parkin remained a threat and he beat Rachubka to a cross, but headed over the crossbar.

Rachubka (pictured) then pulled a superb save to tip over a header from Matty Blair as Fleetwood looked to gain a toe hold back in the game.

Latics made absolutely certain of victory when they added a third goal in the 86th minute.

Substitute Kyle Hardman provided a cross from the right and Sutherland found the net with a first-time shot which squeezed past keeper David Lucas low to his left.

Rachubka did well in stoppage time to keep out an angled shot from Parkin to preserve a clean sheet.

Full-time: Fleetwood Town reserves 0, Latics reserves 3.
