Accrington Youth 0-2 Latics Youth

14 April 2014

The young Latics finished their season in style with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Accrington Stanley youth.

Goals from Haydn Foulds and John Pritchard meant the youngsters secured a second-placed finish in the Youth Alliance League and capped off a superb season.

After a quiet opening 45 minutes, Latics sprung into life in the second half, taking the lead ten minutes after half time.

Jordan Bove did well to get to the byline and his cross picked out the run of Foulds who volleyed home from six yards to give Latics the advantage.

One became two just after the hour mark as Pritchard stabbed home from inside the area. Neat interplay on the edge of the box allowed Ben Grant to pick a pass through to Pritchard who hammered home from eight yards out for his seventh goal of the season.

Manager Tony Philliskirk made changes, bringing on all second year scholars for their final league game and they saw out the remainder of the game to cement second place for Latics.

Assessing the whole season, Philliskirk spoke of his pride for the youngsters. He said: "We only lost four games in the league and that is a great achievement. I'm really proud of them because they've worked ever so hard this year.

"It's been a very good league campaign to finish second out of 17 teams in a very tough league. We're all looking forward to the cup final and hope that we can finish the season well."

A date is still set to be announced regarding the youth team final but they will travel to Blackpool and the manager hopes to finish the season on a high.

"It will be first against second and the fixture between the best two teams," continued Philliskirk. "Hopefully we can finish the season with a bit of silverware because the lads deserve it. They have been tremendous to work with this year and we hope to finish on a high."
