Latics Are Cup Winners

23 April 2014

Substitute defender Ryan Ellison smashed the winning spot kick as a ten-man Oldham Athletic beat Blackpool youth 4-3 on penalties to win the Lancashire FA Professional Youth Cup.

Tom Clarke, Will Kinder and Jordan Bove scored the opening penalties, whilst Joel Coleman saved two spot kicks to win the cup for Latics.

In normal time, Sam Roscoe had given the Seasiders the lead with 15 minutes of the game remaining but in the final minute, Danny Byrnes equalised with a superb volley into the top corner.

Latics, captained by defender Tom Clarke, started the half positively. Welsh under 17 winger Danny Byrnes raced to the byline and his low cross was put over the bar by Jordan Bove.

Bove, who is Latics' top scorer, was causing a threat in the early stages as he got behind the defence but could not get the ball to stick in attack.

As the first half progressed, Blackpool started to get back into the game. Dominic Telford was presented with a great opportunity to put the Seasiders ahead but the striker fired his effort straight at Joel Coleman.

Latics thought they had took the lead on the half hour mark though Jacobs. Byrnes did well to find a cross and Bove's attempt was put away by Jacobs but the winger was adjudged to be offside.

Coleman, who has been offered a contract with the first team, did well to deny Telford five minutes from the break as the striker raced through on goal.

Both sides started the second half with chances to take the lead. Blackpool's Henry Cameron flicked the ball past Coleman but Eddie Fulwood got back onto the line to clear the danger.

Only a minute later and Bove went inches from opening the scoring for Latics. The striker raced onto a through ball but his shot smashed against the side-netting.

On the hour mark, Coleman produced a wonderful tip onto the bar to deny George Lomax from giving the Seasiders the lead.

Five minutes later and Latics were reduced to ten men as Edmundson received a red card. The defender brought down Telford as he raced through on goal and the referee had no hesitation in producing the second yellow card.

Blackpool started to pile on the pressure and took the lead on 76 minutes through Roscoe. The impressive Telford crossed for the young defender who nicked the ball past Coleman to give the Seasiders the lead.

Latics went in search of an equaliser and substitute Will Kinder almost found a route into the area but he was just crowded out as he raced through on goal.

The visitors threw caution to the wind and commited men forward in the final minute. That pressure paid off as Byrnes superbly volleyed into the top corner to equalise and send the game to penalties.

Latics edged Blackpool 4-3 in the shootout to win the Lancashire FA Professional Youth Cup!
