With Latics securing their League One status on Saturday, manager Lee Johnson is predicting an exciting encounter with Sheffield United on Tuesday night.
James Dayton scored the only goal of the game as Latics beat Carlisle United 1-0 on Saturday. That result mathematically ensured the club would be playing in League One next season.
Boss, Johnson, started his press conference praising his players for their victory. "The game-plan worked well," said the gaffer.
"We knew we had to kill the occasion for them which is what we did. They had a couple of half opportunities but I thought we defended very well and then the game started to open up.
"That meant they threw men forward but when Dayton gets the ball one-on-one with the defender, there is only going to be one winner. I was pleased for Dayton to score."
Nigel Clough brings his Sheffield United side to Boundary Park after the initial fixture had to be postponed due to the Blades FA Cup exploits. With both sides having nothing to play for, Johnson is predicting an exciting encounter between the sides.
"It's a home game for us so we want to take the game to them," admitted the 32-year-old.
"I know Nigel Clough well and he will want to win but we want to keep our run going. He's picked up some real momentum since he took over so he will want to take that into next season and win the game."
With safety assured, it now allows the manager to think about his retained list and he admits to learning a lot from last years experience.
He continued: "From what I learned last year, you've got to get your team really early if you can. There is a lot of interesting plans going forward but it's one I'm looking forward to."
